Nearly Half of Sri Lankan Adults Have Never Visited Dentists, Officials Warn Ahead of World Oral Health Day

Nearly 50 percent of Sri Lanka’s adult population has never visited a dental clinic, health officials revealed, highlighting persistent challenges in the country’s public oral health sector. The figures underscore the need for greater public awareness and improved access to dental care across all regions.

Deputy Health Minister Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni said that, despite advancements in dental services, many communities still face significant barriers to accessing care. Geographic disparities, limited resources, and uneven distribution of dental professionals contribute to unequal service availability.

Speaking at the national event marking World Oral Health Day at Galle Face Green, Dr. Wijemuni emphasized that a large number of adults seek dental treatment only when symptoms become severe. “Waiting until pain or infection develops can lead to more complicated procedures and higher treatment costs,” he warned.

The Deputy Minister highlighted that this pattern reflects a broader lack of awareness about preventive dental care. Early detection of dental problems is critical, yet many individuals remain unaware of the importance of regular check-ups and proper oral hygiene practices.

Dr. Wijemuni called for expanded public education campaigns and stronger community outreach to promote oral health. He urged authorities to implement programs that encourage routine dental visits, teach proper hygiene, and ensure timely intervention to prevent severe conditions.

He concluded by stressing that improving oral health in Sri Lanka requires a combined effort from government bodies, healthcare providers, and the public. “Educating citizens and making dental services more accessible will protect smiles and overall health,” he said, urging immediate action to address these long-standing gaps.
