STOCKHOLM — Karolinska Institutet (KI) has appointed Timo Sorsa and Charles “Chuck” Perou as honorary doctors, recognizing their groundbreaking contributions to dentistry and medicine. The honorary degrees will be conferred at a ceremony in Stockholm City Hall on 24 April.
Timo Sorsa, a professor of periodontology at the University of Helsinki, is a leading expert in oral health research. His work shows how inflammation in the mouth, including periodontal disease, can be linked to serious conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Sorsa has pioneered methods to detect diseases early by measuring biomarkers in saliva or gum fluid, enabling rapid tests that support prevention and treatment before illnesses become severe. He has also collaborated extensively with KI, supervising doctoral students and strengthening international research ties.
“Being named an honorary doctor, along with my previous role as visiting professor at KI, is a highlight of my professional life,” said Sorsa. “I also have family connections in Stockholm, which makes this recognition even more special.”
Charles Perou, a professor of genetics at the University of North Carolina, has transformed the understanding and treatment of breast cancer. He identified different molecular subtypes of the disease, revealing that breast cancer is not a single condition but a group of distinct diseases requiring tailored treatments.
Perou’s discoveries have improved therapy accuracy and patient outcomes globally, while also advancing cancer research and precision medicine at KI.
“This honor is one of the greatest a researcher can receive,” said Perou. “It acknowledges my contributions to medicine beyond the lab and confirms that my work in precision medicine is making an impact.”
This year’s appointments highlight KI’s commitment to recognizing research that improves health and deepens understanding of complex diseases worldwide.
