A student-run dental clinic at Northeast Iowa Community College is helping local residents receive affordable dental care while giving students valuable hands-on experience for their future careers. Virgil Hermsen, a retired firefighter, is one of many who rely on the clinic’s services to keep his teeth healthy without breaking the bank. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a dental exam, Hermsen pays only $86 for cleanings performed by students. Like many others, he does not have dental insurance, making the low-cost care especially important for him.
Recently, the clinic has announced a partnership with Hillcrest Family Services to reach more people who may not otherwise get dental attention. Students like Kaitlyn Vantiger say the work allows them to learn about their community while giving back. Vantiger shared that it is special to help people who might not have seen a dentist in years. She is one of 14 students at the clinic, all of whom are preparing for graduation and gaining key experience on the job.
Jeni Kohlmeyer, who manages the clinic, explained that there is a strong need for dental assistants in eastern Iowa. She pointed out that it can be difficult for dental offices to find enough trained staff. The college’s dental assistant program currently has room for more students, and adding more could help the clinic expand its services. Kohlmeyer emphasized that having well-trained assistants is vital for both the workforce and community members seeking affordable care.
People like Hermsen believe that good dental care is a foundation for overall health. He noted that keeping his teeth healthy is important to staying well. The clinic offers an example of how educational programs can support the needs of underserved populations while helping students build careers.
The student dental clinic is fully booked for the current year. However, appointments will be available again in October for those seeking affordable dental care through the program.
