West Philadelphia Health Center Offers Integrated Dental and Medical Care to Underserved Neighborhoods

A community health clinic in West Philadelphia is making it easier for local residents to access both dental and medical care in a single location. The clinic, managed by the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), provides a wide range of health services to people in an area where finding affordable care can often be a challenge. Patients like Vance Evans say the facility has simplified the process of seeking dental care, eliminating the need to search for a separate provider.

Located on Cedar Avenue, the clinic offers everything from primary medical care and emergency services to social support and dental care. Dr. Rajvir Jutla, Dental Director at PHMC, noted that many patients face challenges such as lack of time, transportation, or finances. To make care accessible, the center serves people on Medicaid and those without insurance, using a sliding fee scale to lower costs for those who need help most. Dr. Jutla explained that one of the clinic’s main goals is to remove financial barriers to health services.

The dental clinic is staffed in part by students and residents from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. According to Dr. Cassandra Gafford, who directs oral health clinics at Penn Dental, this arrangement helps future dentists gain experience with a diverse patient population and learn the importance of inclusive care. She emphasized that without this clinic, many local residents might have little or no access to regular dental check-ups and treatment.

For patients, the convenience of having multiple services in one building is a major benefit. Evans noted that he was able to address his dental health while visiting for another appointment, saving him time and effort. He also praised the skill and professionalism of the dental students and residents who treated him at the clinic.

Community clinics like this one are helping to reduce unnecessary visits to hospital emergency departments by providing essential care directly where people live. By meeting a critical need for dental and medical services in underserved neighborhoods, the West Philadelphia clinic is improving public health and offering a model that other communities may seek to follow.
