Dentists and scientists are increasingly urging the public to pay closer attention to the health of their gums, tongue, and teeth, as new research reveals a strong connection between oral care and overall well-being. Poor oral hygiene, which often involves neglecting to clean between teeth or skipping regular tongue scraping, can lead to wider health concerns such as inflammatory diseases, diabetes, heart problems, and even dementia.

The mouth contains a complex microbiome made up of hundreds of bacterial species. When oral hygiene routines fail to address all areas, including the gum line and tongue, inflammation can develop in the mouth and spread throughout the body. This inflammation is now recognized as a chronic condition that can allow harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream, raising the risk of serious illnesses. According to hygienist Laura Hempleman, daily cleaning between teeth is just as important, if not more so, than standard brushing because it helps remove plaque that brushing alone cannot.

Studies have shown that more than half of adults in Britain have gum disease or are at risk, and nearly 90 percent of people over 50 may be affected by early-stage gum problems. Gum disease often starts with painless bleeding and poor hygiene, but without treatment, it can progress to serious conditions like periodontal disease, leading to tooth loss and further health complications. “Brushing alone is not enough,” insists Ms. Hempleman, recommending daily interdental cleaning and careful brushing along the gums.

Research also points to a connection between missing or decayed teeth and shorter life expectancy. In studies involving older adults, those with more healthy or repaired teeth lived longer and faced lower risks of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and dementia. Oral frailty, which includes symptoms like dry mouth and difficulty chewing or swallowing, can reduce healthy life expectancy by contributing to malnutrition and weakened physical condition. Regular dental visits have been found to add nearly a year to healthy life expectancy for seniors.

Experts emphasize several simple steps for maintaining good oral health: clean between teeth every day, scrape your tongue to remove overnight bacteria, brush gently along the gum line twice daily, stay hydrated, limit sugar intake, and prioritize sleep. If persistent bleeding, swelling, or gum recession occurs, seeking dental assessment is vital. Early intervention not only improves oral health but also lowers the risk of developing more serious systemic conditions. Ultimately, caring for oral health is not only about preventing cavities but also about protecting overall health and well-being throughout life.
