KI Appoints Two New Honorary Doctors Who Have Changed the View of Oral Health and Breast Cancer

Karolinska Institutet (KI) has appointed leading researchers Timo Sorsa and Charles “Chuck” Perou as honorary doctors in dentistry and medicine, respectively, in recognition of their groundbreaking work in disease detection and treatment. The degrees will be conferred at a ceremony in Stockholm City Hall on 24 April.

Timo Sorsa, a professor of periodontology at the University of Helsinki, is one of the world’s most cited researchers in dental and oral health. His work focuses on the link between oral inflammation, such as periodontal disease, and systemic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Sorsa has contributed to the development of rapid diagnostic tests that measure biomarkers in saliva or gum fluid, enabling earlier detection and treatment of diseases. He has also collaborated extensively with KI, supervising doctoral students and strengthening international research ties.

“Being named an honorary doctor, alongside my previous role as a visiting professor at KI, is a major highlight of my career,” Sorsa said. “I also have family connections in Stockholm, and I know both my relatives and colleagues at KI are delighted by this recognition.”

Charles Perou, a professor of genetics at the University of North Carolina, is a pioneer in breast cancer research. He identified molecular subtypes of the disease, showing that breast cancer is not a single condition but multiple diseases requiring tailored treatments. This work has improved therapies and patient outcomes globally and has been a key driver for precision medicine initiatives at KI.

“This is one of the greatest honors a researcher can receive,” Perou said. “It recognizes contributions that go beyond laboratory work and confirms the impact of my efforts to advance precision medicine.”

With this year’s honorary appointments, KI highlights the global influence of both researchers: Sorsa in linking oral health to overall well-being, and Perou in reshaping understanding and treatment of breast cancer.
