Oral Health Benefits Confirmed as Fluoride in Water Proves Safe for Children

A landmark U.S. study confirms that fluoride in municipal water is safe and may even enhance children’s cognitive performance. Tracking 26,820 students from birth through 12th grade over forty years, researchers compared lifetime fluoride exposure with standardized test scores in reading, math, and vocabulary.

The findings reveal that adolescents consuming typical levels of fluoridated water scored slightly higher on academic tests than peers with minimal or no exposure. Importantly, no long-term cognitive deficits were observed in adulthood, affirming that community water fluoridation poses no harm to memory, attention, or brain development.

“These results show that fluoride at the levels used in U.S. water systems does not harm children’s brain development,” said Helen Hawkey, Executive Director of the PA Coalition for Oral Health. “They support decades of evidence that fluoridated water is both safe and effective.”

Fluoride in drinking water remains one of the most equitable ways to prevent tooth decay, benefiting all children and adults regardless of dental care access. Communities with fluoridated water report roughly 25% fewer cavities, reduced missed school and workdays, and lower long-term health costs.

In Pennsylvania, water fluoridation is determined locally. Families are encouraged to check whether their water system adjusts fluoride levels, advocate for continued fluoridation, or support programs where fluoridation is not yet implemented.

With decades of research and now this large-scale study, Pennsylvania families can be confident that safe fluoride levels in drinking water protect both oral health and overall development.
