The clinic’s new model is designed to enhance transparency, reduce uncertainty, and simplify the treatment journey for international patients. It begins with a remote consultation stage in which patients securely submit dental X-rays and photographs online. Based on this information, clinicians prepare a detailed treatment plan that includes a full cost estimate before any travel arrangements are made.

Once patients approve their treatment plan, the process moves to scheduling, where travel dates are confirmed and personalized arrangements are organized for their visit to Istanbul.

Research from the Medical Tourism Association highlights the importance of such systems, noting that 97.2% of medical tourists identify trust as the most critical factor in their decision-making. Meanwhile, 57.7% express concerns about cost transparency and international payment processes. Studies also show that nearly 29% of dental professionals believe language barriers can affect informed consent. Despite potential cost savings of 50% to 70% compared with treatment in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, these concerns continue to limit patient participation in dental tourism.

Maltepe Dental Clinic recently demonstrated its approach through the treatment of a patient from Florida. After an initial remote consultation and review of treatment options, the patient traveled to Istanbul for restorative dental care. During the procedure, an initial trial fitting was adjusted based on patient feedback, with final modifications completed through the clinic’s in-house laboratory to meet clinical requirements.

Co-founder Dr. Alper Gurhan said the experience reflects a common misconception about how patients make decisions regarding overseas dental treatment.

“The biggest misconception in dental tourism is that patients choose based solely on price,” he said. “After serving patients from 85 countries over 22 years, we have found that the deciding factor is always trust. Our process addresses concerns regarding communication, cost transparency, and treatment adjustments before the patient boards their flight.”

The clinic also offers continuity of care through a partner facility in London, providing pre-treatment consultations for patients in the UK and Europe as well as post-treatment follow-up support after they return home. This integrated system is intended to address ongoing coordination challenges that are often cited as a limitation in international dental care pathways.
