Well, believe it or not, there is an oral problem in which dental tissue grows at an abnormal rate. The name of this dental disease: is Odontoma.

Odontoma Dental Disease: What is it?

Odontoma is an oral problem that can affect people of all ages it is composed of both hard and soft dental tissues, for example, enamel, dentin, and pulp tissue. When someone has this condition, odontoma, a benign tumor begins to originate within the oral cavity.

When suffering from Odontoma a dental hamartoma will develop, which means that normal dental tissue will grow irregularly. In most cases, the tooth that develops will be impacted within your jaw; but in other cases where the odontomas have erupted into the oral cavity.

FACT: Odontoma on average has been found in patients as young as 14.

  • Delayed tooth eruption
  • Dysphagia
  • Increased bone size under tooth

Types of Odontoma

Compound Odontoma

Compound Odontoma is a collection of small toot-like structures, also called: “denticles”. Over 62% of compound odontoma occurs in the anterior region of the maxilla and tends to affect areas between the crown and canine. The denticles are formed by an exuberant growth of dental lamina, or by the formation of small enamel organs.

Complex Odontoma

Complex Odontoma is composed of haphazardly arranged dental tissue. This haphazardly arranged dental tissue does not resemble a normal tooth, instead, it often looks like a bulk of dental tissue. Over 70% of complex odontomas occur in the posterior region of the mandible.
