ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Following the sugar rush of Halloween, local children have a chance to get their teeth checked and cleaned for free. The Touro College of Dental Medicine in Albuquerque is offering complimentary dental cleanings for kids during the first week of November.
The program will run from Monday, Nov. 3 through Friday, Nov. 7, and is aimed at helping children maintain healthy teeth after consuming Halloween candy. Dental experts emphasize that post-Halloween checkups are especially important because sugary treats can contribute to cavities and other oral health problems if not properly addressed.
“We know children enjoy Halloween treats, but the sugar can take a toll on their teeth,” said a spokesperson from Touro College of Dental Medicine. “Our goal is to make dental care accessible and encourage healthy habits from a young age.”
The free cleanings will be performed by dental students under the supervision of licensed dentists. This allows students to gain hands-on experience while providing the community with quality care. Parents and guardians are encouraged to schedule appointments in advance to ensure availability, as spaces are limited.
Dental professionals stress the importance of routine dental care, especially for children with sensitive teeth or a history of cavities. Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and other long-term oral health issues. By offering free services, Touro College of Dental Medicine hopes to educate families about preventive care while addressing immediate dental needs.
In addition to cleanings, participating children may receive tips on proper brushing and flossing techniques. These educational efforts aim to reduce the risk of dental problems and instill good oral hygiene habits early on. “Teaching kids how to care for their teeth can make a lifelong difference,” the spokesperson added.
The initiative also reflects a growing trend among dental schools nationwide to provide community services while training future dentists. Such programs often focus on underserved populations or periods when dental care is particularly needed, like after holidays that involve high sugar consumption.
With Halloween just behind them, children in Albuquerque now have a chance to enjoy the sweet memories without compromising their oral health. By combining education, preventive care, and hands-on experience for dental students, Touro College of Dental Medicine aims to create a positive impact on both its students and the wider community.
