Fluoride will not be added to California’s Proposition 65 list of carcinogens, following a unanimous vote October 12 by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s (OEHHA) Carcinogen Identification Committee. Proposition 65, which was passed by California voters in 1986, requires businesses to post warnings if their products expose people to carcinogenic substances. The Malibu, CA, City Council unanimously passed a resolution on October 10 that supports “national and worldwide efforts to reduce anthropogenic sources of mercury,” including dental amalgam. Mayor John Sibert sponsored the resolution, which was in response to the United Nations Environmental Programme suggestion that cities take an official position in the phase out or global ban of mercury.
