Dental Clinic in San Diego Offers Free Care to Refugee Children, Honors Late Dentist in February

Even under ideal circumstances, dental care can be difficult to access. For refugees, the barriers are often far greater, driven by past trauma, disrupted health care systems, and high costs in the United States.

To address this gap, City Heights–based nonprofit Cura Smiles will partner with Seeds of Hope to host a free dental clinic for refugee children in San Diego early next month. The clinic coincides with Children’s Dental Health Month and aims to serve young patients who urgently need care.

“Our primary goal is to get people out of pain,” said Christine Passmore, executive director of Cura Smiles. “There are many kids who are in desperate need of dental care.”

Passmore said untreated dental problems affect more than physical health. Oral pain and visible dental issues can harm self-esteem and mental well-being, especially for children who have already experienced displacement and trauma.

Cura Smiles focuses on addressing both the physical and psychological effects of poor oral health, which can lead to social stigma, chronic discomfort, and broader health complications. The clinic will provide free exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, and extractions.

On February 20, the nonprofit will host its Second Annual Hearts Over Hate Clinic. The event honors Dr. Benjamin Harouni, an El Cajon-area dentist who was killed in 2024 shortly after his 28th birthday.

In partnership with Hearts Over Hate, founded by Harouni’s family, the clinic will treat approximately 25 patients who lack access to dental care. More than 30 patients were served during the inaugural event last year. This year’s clinic will take place on what would have been Harouni’s 30th birthday.

“This clinic is a beautiful way to honor Benjamin’s heart for others,” Passmore said. “We’re grateful to his family for helping us continue his legacy of compassion and care.”
