Dental Experts Warn: DIY Dental Braces on Social Media May Cause Damage

Blindly following medical “home remedies” on social media can have serious consequences. Dr. Chris Freeman of the Freeman Orthodontics Clinic recently warned that some popular online braces—including homemade braces and tooth filing—have caused serious dental and bone damage in many teenagers, even requiring emergency medical attention.

Dr. Freeman noted that some young people purchase braces online and secure them with homemade adhesives. This can not only restrict blood circulation to the teeth but also damage the roots, ultimately leading to loose teeth or tooth loss. He emphasized that bracket bonding must be performed by professionals using safe, medical-grade materials.

Another dangerous trend is the use of pliers by teenagers to remove braces themselves. This can tear tooth enamel, damage dental nerves, and even cause tooth misalignment. Dr. Freeman recommends that any brace adjustment or removal procedures should be performed by an orthodontist.

A popular trend in online videos is using thin rubber bands to close gaps. However, these bands can slip under the gumline, causing damage to bone structure and, in severe cases, tooth loss.

Similarly, 3D printing or making your own braces carries significant risks. Without professional scans, X-rays, and doctor supervision, teeth can shift improperly, leading to serious misalignment and jaw problems.

Furthermore, some teenagers use nail files to polish their teeth to “create space.” However, excessive polishing can expose dental nerves, weaken tooth structure, and permanently alter tooth shape. Dr. Freeman emphasizes that enamel reshaping should only be performed by a professional dentist when necessary.

He reminds us that braces and braces aren’t just about improving appearance; they also impact our bite, jaw, and long-term oral health. Blindly trying these DIY online methods can set back years of treatment and cost thousands of dollars to repair the damage. He urges, “Always consult an orthodontist before being tempted by online tips.”
