Dental Insurance Initiative Boosts Early Detection of Gum Disease in Massachusetts

Delta Dental of Massachusetts (DDMA), the state’s largest dental insurer, reports strong early results from a new benefit program that integrates chairside, saliva-based screenings into routine oral exams. The initiative, launched in partnership with Smile Generation®, has improved periodontal health scores by more than 33% on average among returning DDMA patients.

The program offers saliva-based assessments—at no additional cost to members—at participating dental practices statewide. More than 1,600 members have already received screenings, and over 400 have undergone multiple tests.

According to DDMA, patient acceptance has been exceptionally high, with most members agreeing to the assessment and reviewing their scores alongside educational materials.

More than half of screened members accepted treatment plans for periodontal disease when recommended by their dentists, a shift DDMA attributes to increased patient engagement and clearer clinical metrics.

“This innovative program shows that patient-centered care can transform oral health outcomes,” said Dr. Linda Vidone, DMD, DDMA’s Vice President of Clinical Management. “You can manage what you can measure, and we are committed to partnering with dentists to implement solutions that improve both oral and overall health.”

The saliva test measures levels of active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8), an enzyme linked to active collagen breakdown in the gums. Elevated aMMP-8 levels can signal periodontal disease progression before symptoms appear. Lower scores indicate reduced inflammation and healthier gum tissue.

Dentists participating in the program say objective data has strengthened patient understanding and trust. “Metrics drive engagement, and engagement drives outcomes,” said Dr. Shawn Fuller, practice owner of Shrewsbury Dentistry. “Providing patients with a measurable score motivates action and supports the dental team’s role in overall wellness.”

DDMA plans to continue the program through 2026 while monitoring its impact on higher-risk groups, including patients with diabetes and smokers.
