Colonial Drive Family Dentistry helped hundreds of Central Florida residents this holiday season by offering free tooth extractions, marking the 11th year of its annual Free Dental Day.
The one-day event, held Friday, served approximately 300 to 350 patients from Ocoee and surrounding communities on a first-come, first-served basis. Each patient was eligible for one dental extraction at no cost.
“This holiday season, we’re trying to eliminate one pain point, whether physical or financial,” said Dr. Tommy Dorsey, owner and head doctor of Colonial Drive Family Dentistry. “Patients have the opportunity to come in and receive one extraction free of charge.”
The initiative comes as dental care remains a major financial burden for many Americans. According to the National Institutes of Health, dental expenses account for more than a quarter of out-of-pocket healthcare spending for some households.
For patients like Ryan, a returning participant, the timing was especially meaningful. “Right in time for Christmas,” he said. “That’s money back in my pocket. Saving a couple hundred dollars really helps.”
As demand has grown, the practice expanded the program by partnering with six local dentists. Dr. Dorsey said the collaboration allows the clinic to treat more patients efficiently while maintaining quality care.
“We’ve reached a point where it can’t just be one or two doctors,” he said. “We want to serve patients well and give them a great experience.”
Recognizing that dental visits can be stressful, the team focused on creating a supportive and welcoming environment. “Dentistry can be intimidating,” Dr. Dorsey noted. “Our goal is to make patients feel comfortable, respected, and well cared for.”
The event also addressed a broader public health challenge. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 3.7 billion people worldwide suffer from untreated oral conditions, often due to cost and limited access to care.
For Dr. Dorsey, the day was rooted in service. “Giving back is part of God’s purpose for me,” he said. “Being able to use my skills and my team to help others during the holidays is a blessing.”
Colonial Drive Family Dentistry said it plans to continue the Free Dental Day tradition in the coming years, ensuring access to essential dental care for those facing financial barriers.
