How Los Algodones Became ‘Molar City’: Mexican Border Town Thrives as Dental Tourism Destination for Americans

Los Algodones, a small town on the border of Mexico and the United States, has become a popular destination for dental care, drawing over a million visitors each year. Most of these visitors are retirees from the United States seeking more affordable dental treatments than those available back home. With about a thousand dentists working in just a few blocks, the town is now known as “Molar City.”

The city’s rise as a dental hotspot began in the 1960s. Dr. Bernardo Magaña, a local dentist, saw the opportunity to serve American patients and started the first dental clinic in town. He later convinced other dentists to join him and helped shift the town’s focus from agriculture, which had declined due to water shortages, to medical tourism. Under Magaña’s leadership, Los Algodones worked to appeal to foreign patients. Local bars were replaced with clinics and pharmacies, and large events were organized to attract visitors escaping cold winters in the north.

Visitors to Los Algodones usually park on the American side of the border and walk into the town. They are quickly greeted by street promoters, or “jaladores,” whose job is to direct newcomers to dental clinics, pharmacies, or optical shops. Many of these promoters are fluent in English, having grown up in the United States, and specialize in making patients feel comfortable and safe.

Clinic owners in Molar City go to great lengths to meet the expectations of their foreign patients. Dental offices often look and feel like their American counterparts, with familiar interiors and high standards of cleanliness. Local police focus on keeping tourists safe, which is important for maintaining the industry, even though the region faces broader security challenges.

The town’s dependence on American dental tourists has created both opportunities and challenges for its residents. While tourism provides jobs and income, many workers struggle with the fact that they serve people who can cross the border easily, while they themselves cannot. Some promoters are deportees, working within sight of a country they can no longer enter. Despite these complex issues, Los Algodones remains a vital source of affordable dental care for many Americans and a unique economic lifeline for its community.
