USask Dental Access Program Expands Free Oral Health Services for Low-Income and Uninsured Residents

A new initiative from the College of Dentistry, called the USask Dental Access and Training Expansion Program, is seeking to provide free dental care for people who may have difficulty getting treatment in other ways. The program is designed especially for those without private insurance or people who are unable to get help from the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Madiha Rizki, the communications coordinator for the College of Dentistry, explained that the program’s main goal is to support low-income families, newcomers to Canada, and anyone who faces challenges affording dental health care. She said that people experiencing housing insecurity and others who deal with financial difficulties are also encouraged to take part.

To make sure the program reaches those who need it most, the College is working with community groups and individuals who already support these populations. Rizki mentioned that they are inviting frontline workers, community organizations, and faith group leaders to help spread the word about the new services and connect community members with the program.

As part of the effort, the initiative also has referral programs in place, so organizations can easily guide their clients toward receiving dental care. The outreach is focused on making sure no one is left behind because of economic or social reasons.

The USask Dental Access and Training Expansion Program not only helps people receive important dental treatment, but it also offers opportunities for dental students to learn and practice their skills while serving those in need. This combination of giving care and training future professionals strengthens both the college and the health of the wider community.
