Local Health Centers in Baguio Offer Free Dental Care During National Dental Month

Local dentists in Baguio City are urging residents to pay more attention to their oral health by making regular visits to their local dental clinics. This message was highlighted during a public forum held at the City Public Information office, where community health officials stressed the importance of routine dental check-ups and good hygiene habits.

Dr. Brenda de Leon, a leading dentist from the City Health Services Office, announced that free dental services are available at all 16 district health centers throughout the city. These services are part of the activities planned for the upcoming National Dental Health Month in February. This year’s event is themed to encourage residents to take advantage of dental cleanings and fluoride treatments provided through public health programs.

The free dental care offered in local centers includes oral prophylaxis, fluoride application, and basic tooth restoration. However, Dr. de Leon pointed out that many residents are still unaware of these benefits. She said a lack of information is one of the main reasons people do not use these services, even though local dentists are available at neighborhood health centers.

Dr. de Leon also gave practical advice to help families improve their dental health. She warned about the dangers of consuming sugary foods, which often lead to cavities. She advised everyone to brush their teeth for two minutes using circular movements, a soft-bristled brush, and fluoride toothpaste. She also discussed the harmful effects of tobacco use and betel nut chewing, emphasizing that these habits can cause serious oral problems such as discoloration and in severe cases, even oral cancer.

The dentist recommended that individuals visit their dental clinics at least twice a year for check-ups and cleanings. She explained that people should not wait until they feel pain before seeking care, because early detection and treatment can prevent more serious problems later. Planned activities for Dental Health Month include a dental bus providing cleaning and fluoride services to city employees and a public medical mission supported by the Department of Health. Residents are encouraged to use these free resources and focus on preventive care to ensure better oral health for themselves and their families.
