Metro Students Receive Free Dental Care in Classroom Visit

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Some metro students received free dental care without leaving their classrooms on Thursday morning.

Second graders at Hilldale Elementary School in northwest Oklahoma City participated in a special visit from the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Cavity Prevention Clinic. The mobile clinic provided oral hygiene education and dental services right at the school.

“Make sure you’re brushing where your gums and your teeth meet, OK?” a dental hygienist instructed a student while examining their teeth.

The clinic emphasizes that every tooth is precious, even comparing them to diamonds. Teaching children how to care for these “diamonds” is a critical part of the program.

“How many times a day do you brush your teeth?” the hygienist asked one student.

“Two, mostly,” the student replied.

“Perfect,” the hygienist responded, highlighting the importance of consistent oral care.

For many of the second graders, this hands-on education came alongside direct dental care. About 50 students received treatments ranging from exams to preventive care during the visit.

“It’s life-changing, honestly,” said Hilldale Elementary Principal Emily Jantz.

Second-grader Yeslani agreed, saying, “I go to the dentist to clean my teeth.”

Principal Jantz added that the students were particularly excited about the experience. “I think they were so happy because their teeth felt so clean and cared for. They didn’t want to close their mouths because they were proud of how great they felt,” she said.

The timing of the visit is significant. “Your first molars erupt around second grade,” explained Terrisa Singleton, Foundation Director for Delta Dental of Oklahoma. “That’s why we give sealants to second graders. You want to protect these teeth before cavities can develop.”

Dental sealants are highly effective in preventing tooth decay, reducing the risk of cavities by up to 80 percent. The initiative is particularly important in Oklahoma, which received a “D” grade on its latest oral health report card.

The clinic’s efforts reflect a broader goal of improving oral health among young children. By combining education with preventive care, the program aims to give students a strong foundation for lifelong dental health.

For students like Yeslani, the visit was both educational and empowering. “I learned how to brush better,” she said. “And now my teeth feel really clean.”

Programs like this bring dental care to communities that may face barriers to regular dentist visits. By visiting schools directly, Delta Dental of Oklahoma helps ensure children receive the attention and treatment they need, while also teaching them valuable habits that can last a lifetime.
