More Patients Seek Endodontists for Complex Dental Care

New data from the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) shows that patients are increasingly turning to endodontists to treat tooth pain and preserve their natural teeth through root canal therapy.

Insurance claims from 2020 to 2024 indicate a steady rise in the number of patients seeking endodontic specialists. Over this period, endodontists’ share of endodontic treatments grew by 9.8%, rising from 34.6% in 2020 to 44.4% in 2024.

Similarly, the proportion of patients receiving care from endodontists increased by 9%, from 36% in 2020 to 45% in 2024.

Experts say the trend reflects growing trust in endodontists’ expertise and greater awareness of the benefits of root canal therapy. “Patients are learning that root canals are a reliable way to save natural teeth,” said a spokesperson for the AAE.

A U.S. survey conducted by the AAE earlier this year found that 94% of adults value keeping their natural teeth for as long as possible. The survey also revealed that while many patients have concerns about root canal procedures, most report positive experiences after treatment.

The survey shows that 45% of adults have undergone a root canal. Of those, 71% said they were glad they chose the procedure over a tooth extraction. These numbers suggest that patients are not only more willing to seek endodontic care but also increasingly satisfied with the outcomes.

The rise in patient confidence comes amid efforts by dental professionals to educate the public about endodontic procedures. Root canals, once associated with pain and discomfort, are now viewed as effective and safe treatments. Modern techniques and anesthesia have made the procedures more comfortable and efficient.

For dentists, the data offers insight into patient behavior and treatment preferences. General practitioners and specialists alike are seeing more referrals to endodontists, especially for complex cases where preserving a tooth is critical.

Overall, the trend underscores a shift in patient priorities. Many Americans now prefer treatments that maintain their natural teeth whenever possible. With the combined influence of better public education, advanced technology, and positive patient experiences, endodontists are playing an increasingly important role in oral health care.
