New York Allocates $10 Million to Expand Dental Care for Children in Schools

ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Health announced Friday that $10 million will be dedicated to expanding dental care services at school-based health centers, aiming to improve oral health outcomes for children across the state.

Governor Kathy Hochul said the initiative will provide both preventive and restorative dental services, including screenings, sealants, and treatments. These services will be delivered through fixed school-based clinics, mobile dental units, and portable setups within school facilities.

“Our administration’s children’s health agenda ensures that our youngest and most vulnerable have access to essential care,” Hochul said. “With this investment, we are meeting children where they are to provide dental services and set them on a path to a healthy life.”

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the importance of oral health for overall well-being. “Thanks to Governor Hochul’s leadership, we are supporting healthy habits and improving access to preventive dental care at an early age. Regular brushing, flossing, and access to preventive care can reduce tooth decay and positively impact children’s overall health,” he said.

Funding will support dental service delivery for students lacking regular access to care, cover costs not reimbursed by insurance, pay staff salaries, and fund equipment and supplies. The initiative also aims to expand service capacity, reduce cost barriers in underserved communities, and promote health equity in low-resource areas.

Thirty-three school-based health centers will receive funding over five years. Recipients must report on service metrics, program impact, and outcomes, including the number of sealants, screenings, and treatments provided.

This effort marks a significant step in improving oral health access for New York’s children, particularly those in underserved communities.
