North County Students Receive Dental Care Through Mobile Clinic

VISTA, Calif. — Maryland Elementary School students received on-site dental care Tuesday thanks to a mobile clinic aimed at improving access to oral health services.

The 29-foot mobile unit is part of Vista Community Clinic’s (VCC) A+ Teeth Program, which brings dental care directly to students in Oceanside and Vista. The initiative seeks to eliminate common barriers, such as transportation, and ensure children receive timely treatment.

“Our goal is to meet all of our students’ needs, not just their educational ones,” said Maryland Elementary Principal Renée Evans. “You cannot learn if you have a toothache.” The Vista Unified School District partners with VCC to make the program widely accessible.

Dr. Rebecca Cornille, VCC’s Chief Dental Officer, said the mobile clinic visits schools almost daily, including weekends, offering preventive care to reduce long-term oral health problems. “We’re excited to continue expanding our services and make a lasting difference in students’ lives,” she said.

Research highlights the impact of dental pain on learning. Children experiencing tooth pain are four times more likely to have lower grades than peers without pain, according to the American Journal of Public Health. The clinic aims to remove obstacles that prevent children and families from accessing care.

Evans emphasized the broader goal of addressing health and social needs. “You cannot learn if you have a fever and no medical care, or if social-emotional needs are not met,” she said. “Providing these resources is part of our mission, and VCC plays a key role.”

Staff also note that mobile clinics can reduce anxiety associated with dental visits. Luiz Lopez, a care coordinator with VCC for 14 years, said children feel more comfortable when familiar faces provide care. “We work with students from Pre-K through high school. They see us regularly and recognize us, which helps ease their fears,” Lopez said.

During the 2024–2025 school year, the VCC mobile clinic served 627 students across 20 schools, delivering 291 dental sealants and making 265 referrals for further care.

“This program is especially vital for students who might otherwise struggle to access dental care,” Cornille said. “By working together, Vista leaders and community organizations are giving every child the chance to lead a healthier life.”
