Orthodontic Practices Shift to Same-Day Braces Starts with Advanced Bonding Materials

Orthodontic practices are increasingly moving away from the traditional multi-appointment process, offering same-day starts that allow patients to scan, plan, and bond in a single visit. This shift, driven by patient demand for convenience and practice efficiency, is made possible by innovations in bonding materials.

“Being able to bond quickly and do it well is what matters most,” says Ryan Allo, DDS, MS, owner of Servant Heart Orthodontics in Rowlett, Texas. “Universal adhesives and self-etching primers streamline the process, cutting down on steps and saving time.”

Many practices see same-day starts as a way to improve case acceptance rates. Allo notes that patients who leave without scheduling often delay or abandon treatment. “Doing a consult, presenting fees, and starting the same day saves time and is usually more convenient for patients,” he says.

Preparation begins before the appointment. Allo’s team introduces the option during pre-consultation calls, presenting it as a convenience rather than a sales tactic. “If you tell them ahead of time, they can consider it without feeling pressured,” he says.

Same-day starts require careful workflow management. Practices must balance speed with quality, treating each appointment as a potentially unscheduled bonding procedure. “Cutting down on steps makes you quicker and more efficient,” Allo explains.

Advanced bonding solutions are critical in this model. Materials that combine or eliminate steps reduce variability and improve predictability. “Transbond Plus Self-Etching Primer combines etching and priming, eliminating rinsing and drying,” says David Solid, global orthodontics portfolio expert at Solventum. “APC Flash-Free Adhesive, pre-coated to brackets, removes the step of applying and cleaning adhesive, maintaining bond failure rates under 2% in the first 90 days.”

Direct bonding, compared with indirect methods, suits same-day starts because it avoids lab work. Self-etching primers remove separate etch and rinse steps, while rapid-cure bonding agents shorten cure time from 20 seconds to five seconds per bracket, reducing a full case appointment from 90 minutes to 45 minutes.

Fishbein Orthodontics, with nine Florida locations, reports an 80% same-day start rate using pre-pasted brackets and self-etching primers. “Patients can go from consult to braces in about an hour,” says Ben Fishbein, DDS. Pre-pasted brackets remove a manual adhesive step, improving speed, consistency, and outcomes.

Amberley Gilstrap, the practice’s clinical manager, emphasizes standardized training: “Everyone follows the same steps, which reduces bond failures and emergency appointments.”

Faster, more reliable bonding benefits patients, reducing chair time and emergency visits. “With pre-pasted brackets, we have fewer breakages and fewer emergency appointments,” Fishbein says. “It’s a better experience for patients and a more efficient workflow for staff.”

Same-day starts, enabled by advanced bonding systems, are reshaping orthodontic care by combining convenience, efficiency, and clinical reliability.
