Orthodontics Education Advances as MIHS Hosts Clear Aligner Training and Signs MoU

RAWALPINDI: Margalla Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) hosted a specialized academic session on clear aligner therapy, marking a step forward in modern orthodontic education and clinical training.

The one-hour session was conducted by Prof. Dr. Afeef Umar Zia, Head of the Department of Orthodontics at Margalla College of Dentistry. It attracted practicing dentists, MIHS graduates, and alumni, highlighting growing interest in digital and patient-centered orthodontic solutions.

Senior MIHS leadership and faculty attended the session, including Senior Vice Principal Prof. Maj. Shakir, Vice Principal Prof. Dr. Noman Bari, HOD Medical Education Assistant Prof. Dr. Saba Farooq, and heads of Clinical and Basic Sciences departments.

Prof. Dr. Afeef provided a structured overview of clear aligner therapy, focusing on its clinical benefits and core treatment principles. He emphasized that predictable outcomes depend on accurate diagnosis, appropriate case selection, and digital treatment planning. He also explained how technology can improve efficiency, enhance patient compliance, and reduce chairside time.

A major component of the session focused on the digital workflow required for aligner-based orthodontic practice. Participants were guided through virtual treatment planning, including assessment, aligner design, staging of tooth movement, and treatment monitoring. The discussion underscored the importance of biomechanics and ongoing clinical supervision.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, addressing concerns related to case selection, patient expectations, workflow integration, and treatment predictability.

Following the academic program, an MoU was signed between TruAlign, represented by Prof. Dr. Afeef Umar Zia, and MIHS, represented by Prof. Maj. Shakir. The agreement establishes collaboration in research, continuing professional development, and clinical training, with MIHS graduates and alumni eligible for concessions on clinical case loads.

Dental education experts say such initiatives are essential for aligning local practice with evolving global standards, as clear aligner therapy continues to play a growing role in contemporary orthodontics.
