Philippines Faces Dental Care Shortage With Only One Dentist Serving Every 53,000 People

Access to dental health services in the Philippines remains a challenge, as recent figures reveal there is only one dentist available for every 53,000 Filipinos. This number falls far short of the World Health Organization’s recommendation of one dentist for every 7,500 people, raising concerns about the nation’s ability to provide adequate dental care.

Emmie Liza Chiong, the Undersecretary of Health, stated that the country’s limited resources make it difficult to address oral health needs effectively. Chiong explained that just a small portion—0.14 percent—of the Department of Health’s budget is allocated to oral health. This situation often leaves many Filipinos, especially those from poorer communities, unable to afford dental procedures.

To improve the situation, health officials are pushing for the revival of the Bureau of Oral Health. They believe boosting this program and increasing its funding could help more people get the dental care they need. Chiong also pointed out that oral health should not be overlooked, as problems in the mouth can have serious consequences for other parts of the body, including the heart.

Another concern mentioned by Chiong is the relatively low salaries received by dentists in the Philippines. This may contribute to the shortage of dental professionals and slow efforts to improve access to oral treatments across the country.

Health authorities are urging lawmakers to review the current status and funding of oral health initiatives. Many hope that by prioritizing dental care and supporting the dental workforce, more Filipinos will be able to access regular dental consultations and maintain better overall health.
