A new pilot project has launched to make dental appointments easier for veterans.
The Veterans Settlement Project, which operates six Armed Forces centers in Cornwall, will roll out the program at its newest center in Penzance. Starting in October, veterans will be able to book dental care directly through the center.
The project aims to reduce barriers to accessing essential dental services, particularly for veterans living in rural areas.
It is also expected to improve access to basic healthcare for veterans, who often face challenges navigating the civilian healthcare system.
Paul Mouncher, who served in the Royal Navy for 28 years and is now the new community center and volunteer coordinator, shared his perspective: “I joined the military as a teenager, and after leaving, I didn’t know where to go for advice and support, even for the simplest things,” he said.
“No one explains the long wait lists for doctors, dentists, housing, and the everyday issues so many veterans become accustomed to during their service.
Due to this lack of guidance, most veterans don’t know what help is available and ultimately struggle to participate in daily life.
These centers have proven crucial in connecting the military community, support services, and charities, providing immediate support and avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy.”
