TikTok’s Dental Beauty Trends Worry Dentists: 6 Misleading Practices

On TikTok, it’s common to see cute dogs, food, and fashion trends, but a recent trend of “DIY teeth care” is worrying dentists. These seemingly “cheap and quick” teeth whitening or shaping tricks may actually pose serious risks to oral health.

Dr. Gopinder Lalia, founder of Lume Dental Clinic in Cheshire, UK, and a senior dentist, pointed out that although many people try these methods with good intentions, some of these “smile secrets” are not only ineffective, but harmful. He specifically pointed out the following six most worrying TikTok trends.

1. Homemade teeth whitening methods may damage tooth enamel

There are many homemade whitening recipes circulating on social platforms, such as brushing with baking soda mixed with lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, or even bleach. Although these methods may have a short-term whitening effect, they can seriously corrode tooth enamel, causing tooth sensitivity and even gum problems. Dr. Lalia recommends that if you want to whiten your teeth safely and permanently, you should still choose a regular whitening treatment performed by a professional dentist.

2. Use exercise to deal with teeth grinding? Careful evaluation is required

Some TikTok users claim that pressing the tongue on the palate or massaging the jaw can relieve nighttime teeth grinding. Although these actions have the effect of relaxing muscles in some cases, if the teeth grinding problem is serious, it is still recommended to consult a dentist, because the wrong exercise method may be counterproductive.

3. Grinding teeth with nail files: an extremely dangerous trend

A shocking new trend is to use sandpaper or emery boards to directly file teeth in an attempt to adjust the shape. This not only permanently damages tooth enamel, but may also cause tooth loss or extreme sensitivity. Teeth trimming should be performed by professionals, and bonding or reshaping techniques are safe and effective.

4. DIY denture veneers: extremely high health risks

Some users use super glue or other adhesives to stick cheap veneers to achieve the visual effect of a “perfect smile.” These products are easy to fall off when eating, and the adhesives used may contain harmful chemicals, which is extremely harmful to the oral cavity if they are exposed for a long time. Formal veneers should be customized by a dentist, using safe materials and professionally installed.

5. Rubber band correction of teeth gaps: small actions, big harm

In order to close the gaps between the front teeth, some people use rubber bands to wrap their teeth tightly. But this method may cause serious damage to the gums, tooth roots and even the mandible, and there is a risk of accidental swallowing. In contrast, orthodox correction methods such as transparent aligners (such as Invisalign) are safer and more reliable.

6. Blindly follow the “teeth secrets” on the Internet: Don’t take risks

Although the DIY videos on the Internet seem simple and immediate, Dr. Lalia emphasized that these unproven dental methods not only cannot really solve the problem, but may also cause more trouble. Professional oral care should be guided by qualified dentists, and don’t believe in the “miracle of short videos”.

In short, if you see a “home remedy” for dental care on TikTok, think twice before you act. Those little tricks that seem to help you smile more confidently often hide huge risks of harming your oral health.
