University of Portsmouth to Open Dental Clinic, Tackling South-East Dentist Shortage

The University of Portsmouth has been granted Dental Authority Status (DAS) as it prepares to launch a new dental school, addressing a critical shortage of dentists in the South-East of England.

Professor Chris Louca, Director of Dentistry, said the move aligns with the government’s recent expansion of UK dental student training. “The government has announced an increase of 50 places each year, starting September 2027,” he explained.

The five-year programme at Portsmouth will produce additional dentists well-prepared to work within the National Health Service.

“Our state-of-the-art simulation and clinical facilities will allow students to train to the highest standards and develop practical skills while treating patients,” Louca added.

Graduates will be equipped for modern dental practice, providing high-quality care to patients in Portsmouth and surrounding regions.
