A TikTok user reported that a US dentist quoted her $4,500 for multiple treatments, but she only paid $235 after visiting a clinic in Tijuana, highlighting the widening cost disparity in dental care.
TikTok user @handerplants posted that she visited a clinic in Tijuana with the US dentist’s treatment plan. The clinic initially gave her an online estimate of about $800.
After an in-office evaluation, the Mexican dentist deemed many of the recommended treatments, including an expensive deep cleaning, unnecessary and revised the plan.
Her final treatment bill in Tijuana was $235. She identified the clinic as “American Biodentistry” and praised the treatment she received.
The discrepancy garnered widespread attention online. The video, subsequently shared by @WallStreetApes on X, garnered millions of views and prompted commenters to share similar experiences. Some users accused US medical institutions of over-prescribing expensive treatments.
Others said they even traveled abroad to receive the same treatment at a lower price. Examples included in the post included reports of significantly lower prices for crowns and cleanings in Mexico and other countries.
The report also highlights a broader trend in dental spending in the United States. Studies show that the cost of dental services is rising by approximately 3-5% annually.
Many employer dental plans cap annual benefits at $1,000 to $2,000, resulting in approximately 40% of patients paying out-of-pocket for medical expenses exceeding the limit.
What began as a TikTok post has morphed into a broader discussion about price transparency, the value of second opinions, and the role of medical tourism in combating high dental costs in the United States.
