SOUTH RIVER, N.J. — A 49-year-old New Jersey woman has been arrested for allegedly practicing dentistry without a license and attempting a root canal on a patient, authorities said.
Ana Amato of Old Bridge was taken into custody on Feb. 19 following a months-long investigation by the South River Police Department (SRPD).
“This is certainly not the type of case we see every day, but it affirms our officers approach every call — routine or not — with professionalism and commitment to public safety,” SRPD Chief Mark Tinitigan said in a Facebook press release.
The investigation began in September 2025 after officers initially responded to what seemed to be a routine dispute. During follow-up, they uncovered evidence suggesting that dental procedures were being performed by an unlicensed individual. Detective Patrick Molina later led the inquiry.
According to a criminal complaint, a man scheduled a root canal with Amato for $1,000, including a $300 down payment. He reported that Amato injected his gum with anesthetic and began drilling before abruptly stopping, telling him to return later. She later refused to complete the procedure or refund the deposit, prompting the man to report the incident to police, reportedly with gauze still in his mouth.
On Feb. 19, police executed a search warrant at Amato’s Main Street office, seizing multiple items. She faces charges of second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree financial facilitation of criminal activity, and third-degree unlawful practice of dentistry.
