Bioactive Crystal Technology (BCT): The Science Behind Predictable Bone Regeneration

As bioactivity becomes increasingly central to regenerative dentistry, OsteoGen™ bone grafting materials are driving the conversation with Bioactive Crystal Technology (BCT), a non-sintered, biomimetic approach to bone regeneration. While many bone graft substitutes on the market today are sintered ceramics, BCT utilizes non-sintered calcium phosphate crystals with a composition similar to natural bone, providing a favorable environment for regeneration.

What is Bioactive Crystal Technology (BCT)?

Bioactive Crystal Technology (BCT) refers to the proprietary, non-sintered calcium phosphate crystals at the core of all OsteoGen bone grafting materials. Because these crystals are not subjected to the high-heat sintering process used in conventional ceramic grafts, they retain their bioactive properties and actively participate in the healing process by releasing calcium ions that support osteoblastic differentiation and mineralized matrix deposition. Rather than simply serving as a passive scaffold, BCT provides the necessary biochemical components for hard tissue regeneration, creating an environment that helps promote cellular activity and bone formation. The result is a graft material that is biocompatible, osteoconductive, and truly bioactive.

Why Non-Sintered Matters

Sintering—the high-heat process used to manufacture many bone graft materials—fuses particles into dense, ceramic structures. While this achieves a usable particle size, it fundamentally alters the material’s biological behavior. Sintered grafts often remain visible on radiographs indefinitely, which may make it difficult to assess true bone regeneration. Additionally, these dense graft materials can become encapsulated with connective tissue rather than being fully resorbed.

OsteoGen’s non-sintered BCT takes a different path. The graft is radiolucent upon placement and gradually becomes radiopaque as it remodels into natural bone, typically within three to five months. This radiographic progression mirrors natural bone density changes, giving clinicians a clear visual indicator of healing progress and optimal timing for implant placement.

“Bioactive Crystal Technology gives clinicians the best of both worlds: a graft material grounded in solid science that’s also practical to use. It remodels like natural bone, and we can see that healing on a radiograph. That’s the kind of predictability we need, and we get that from OsteoGen,” states Charles D. Schlesinger, DDS, FICOI, VP of Clinical Development, Impladent Ltd.

Independent research published in the Journal of Periodontology validates OsteoGen’s bioactive performance. Jones et al. found that OsteoGen® Plug achieved 94.4% porosity, creating an optimal scaffold environment for vascular infiltration and new bone formation, and demonstrated osteoblast proliferation up to six times greater than xenograft and allograft materials. Live cell imaging further confirmed significantly greater osteoblast activity across multiple time periods, while the xenograft material was unable to sustain cellular activity.

Simplified Workflow, Predictable Outcomes

OsteoGen™ bone grafting materials (available in Plug, Strip, and Block forms) combine BCT with Type I collagen to create ready-to-use grafting solutions. The OsteoGen® Plug, in particular, eliminates the need for a separate membrane in routine socket preservation cases, helping to streamline procedure time and simplify the surgical workflow without compromising clinical results.
