Mid-South Mission of Mercy Celebrates a Decade of Free Dental Care with Large Clinic in Memphis

Hundreds of Memphis residents are expected to benefit from free dental services this weekend as the Mid-South Mission of Mercy holds its annual clinic at Bellevue Baptist Church. Now in its tenth year, the event offers critical dental care to people who otherwise may have delayed treatment because of high costs or family priorities. Volunteers, including dentists and non-dental workers, gather from near and far to help make the clinic possible.

The demand for dental services was clear even before the clinic opened. According to Stueart Hudsmith of the Mid-South Mission of Mercy, the first person joined the line on Thursday afternoon, highlighting how important affordable care is for many community members. “A lot of these individuals have had to put dental care on the backburner for various reasons. It’s expensive, you know, they put their family first,” said Hudsmith.

This year, the clinic was rescheduled from its typical January date due to a snow and ice storm. Organizers faced challenges in coordinating the event, including managing a team of 2,000 volunteers, media presence, and delivering supplies from across the country. Still, with the support from donors and Bellevue Baptist Church, the group was able to keep the clinic running.

Services provided at the clinic include free teeth cleanings, fillings, extractions, and partial dentures. There is also a dedicated pediatric area so children can receive dental care. “It’s just a great, great service to the community and to see so many people … volunteering that come together to help each year is just a humbling experience,” said Barrett Sexton, a Memphis oral surgeon who has participated in the clinic since its first year.

The clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Organizers encourage parents and patients to arrive early for the best chance to be seen. The event will continue at Bellevue Baptist Church on Saturday, starting at 6 a.m., providing more opportunities for those in need to receive free dental care.
