New course aims to close leadership training gap in dental clinics

The American Dental Association is now accepting applications for its new Certified Clinic Director programme, designed for dentists who currently lead—or aspire to lead—dental clinics.

Developed in response to the limited training pathways available for clinic leadership, the programme aims to meet a growing industry need for consistent, advanced expertise in clinical operations, regulatory compliance, financial oversight and strategic leadership.

“As dentists, we tend to place a focus on our clinical training, especially in the early stages of our career,” said shane ricci, d.d.s., chair of the ADA Council on Dental Practice. “With time and experience, it becomes very apparent that while clinical proficiency is critical, the ability to lead the dental team and the operations of the dental office becomes equally important. This certification course provides the important pieces to truly build and apply the necessary skills to excel as a clinical leader.”

The six-month programme will begin with a networking session on 19 Sept. at ADA Headquarters in Chicago, and will run from Oct. 2025 to Mar. 2026. Participants will take part in two live, interactive webinars and two self-paced e-learning modules each month.

By the end of the course, attendees will earn 35 continuing education credits and receive a Certificate of Completion. The inaugural intake will consist of around 50 members. New clinic directors, seasoned leaders seeking an advantage, practice owners, multi-clinic leaders and emerging group practice leaders are encouraged to apply. Applications close on 11 Aug.
