A new £5 million dental clinic, the Dental Education Practice, has officially opened in Plymouth, offering vital NHS dental services to the local community.
Operated by the University of Plymouth, the clinic is set to provide up to 12,000 NHS appointments annually for urgent care and follow-up treatments. Students from the University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental School will work alongside experienced specialists to care for patients without an NHS dentist.
Jason Wong MBE, Chief Dental Officer for England, described the opening as a “really positive step for Plymouth.”
The clinic, run by Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise, a subsidiary of the University, has taken a 20-year lease on the Plymouth City Council’s former First Stop Shop building on New George Street.
A 2024 GP Patient Survey revealed that one in four patients in England struggled to see an NHS dentist in the past two years. The new clinic aims to address this growing need for accessible dental care.
Magda Farrant, one of the first patients to visit the clinic, shared her appreciation for the service. “The days of having two NHS check-ups a year are gone, so having a place like this is amazing. The students have been wonderful, and I’m glad to support their education.”
Ellie Orum, a newly qualified dentist working at the practice as part of her foundation training, also praised the facility. Originally from Plymouth, Orum said, “It’s great. The support is excellent, and there are plenty of specialists around if you need help. Even though I’m qualified, we’re all still learning, and this is a perfect place to build confidence and enhance our skills.”
