People living in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being reminded that urgent dental care on the NHS is available, with many more emergency appointments now offered to help those with sudden dental problems. The NHS in the region has increased the number of emergency dental slots, aiming to make quick treatment more accessible for those in pain or facing unexpected dental issues.
Since April 2025, NHS dental practices across Cambridge, Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, Fenland, and East Cambridgeshire have provided 14,196 urgent appointments. These additional appointments cover a range of serious dental problems, such as severe toothache, ongoing pain, swollen areas in the mouth, broken crowns or bridges, and bleeding gums. Patients do not need to be registered at a specific dental practice for urgent care and can contact any local NHS dentist to ask about availability.
The increased appointments are part of a national Urgent Dental Programme, designed to help people access emergency treatment when needed. The NHS advises those with urgent dental needs to use the NHS 111 service, available online and by phone, to be directed to a nearby dental practice offering emergency care. Regular patients are encouraged to get in touch with their own dentist first, if possible.
Examples of situations where urgent dental care should be sought include knocked-out teeth, injuries, severe or ongoing pain affecting sleep or daily life, swelling, lumps in the mouth, heavy bleeding after tooth removal, or broken dental work. Pam Green, Director of Neighbourhood Health & Partnerships at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB, emphasized the importance of getting quick help, explaining that the extra appointments are aimed at making sure nobody is left without care during a dental crisis.
The cost for urgent NHS dental care starts at £27.40, though children under 18 and young people in certain full-time education can receive treatment for free. More information about eligibility for free or subsidized dental care is provided by the NHS. The ongoing effort to provide emergency dental appointments is expected to ease worries for local residents and help those in need receive attention quickly and efficiently.
