More Urgent Dental Appointments Now Available Across Hertfordshire and West Essex

Dental care access in Hertfordshire and west Essex has improved as 74 dental practices now offer additional urgent appointments during regular business hours. This move aims to help local residents who need quick treatment for teeth or gum problems, regardless of whether they are already registered at a dental practice. Over 10,000 courses of urgent dental treatment are now available as part of the expanded provision, giving more people the chance to see a dentist when they need care the most.

This increase in urgent dental slots adds to the 11,000 appointments per year provided by the NHS urgent dental care pilot service. Patients in areas like Hemel Hempstead, Watford, and Waltham Abbey can access these services within regular clinic hours. Outside of these hours, urgent care needs are met by the local out-of-hours dental service, which operates between 6pm and 8pm on weekends and bank holidays.

A spokesperson for the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board emphasized the importance of improving urgent dental care access as a top NHS priority. They highlighted that helping people access local dental services quickly not only benefits those with severe tooth pain but also eases the strain on general practice doctors and hospital emergency rooms. Thousands of patients have already been treated through the expanded appointments since the scheme began.

Despite the boost in available dental slots, some patients have not attended their scheduled appointments. Health officials remind people to go to their booked times, as skipping appointments can prevent themselves and others from receiving needed care. Even if pain has faded, there may still be an underlying dental problem that should be checked by a professional.

Residents are encouraged to call NHS 111 if they have urgent dental issues, such as a knocked-out tooth, severe or persistent mouth pain, swelling or unusual lumps in the mouth, ongoing bleeding after a tooth removal, or broken dental work like fillings or dentures. With the added appointments and ongoing improvements, the aim is for everyone in the area to have faster and more convenient access to urgent dental treatment.
