Miller Johnson, a 42-year-old Sherman resident, knows the life-changing power of oral care firsthand. After serving in the Navy following 9/11, Johnson returned home to face homelessness and severe dental problems.
“At some point, I realized I don’t have a home, never have had a home,” Johnson recalled. Coupled with broken teeth, cavities, abscesses, and missing teeth, his oral health was a serious medical concern — yet treatment seemed financially out of reach.
For more than 20 years, dental care remained a distant dream, until Johnson met Dr. Fatimah Waseem. “Very nervous, very scared,” Dr. Waseem said of Johnson’s first visit. “He was very ashamed to even talk.”
Johnson qualified for Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement, which provides free dental care to veterans and others in need. Together, they opted to extract all of Johnson’s remaining teeth and fit him with dentures, giving him a completely new smile.
“He has completely transformed as a patient,” Dr. Waseem said. “He is talkative, lighter, and seems brand new. It’s a second chance for him.”
For Johnson, the impact goes beyond appearance. “They covered me in a way that I don’t even think they can understand,” he said. Now a father of three, he is focusing on rebuilding his health and family life.
“Getting my teeth taken care of may have saved my life,” Johnson added, highlighting the critical role oral care plays in overall well-being.
