Vanessa Feltz Praises NHS Nurse for Midnight Teeth Cleaning at Unsung Heroes Awards

Last night at the “Best Heroes Awards” at the Waldorf Astoria London, Vanessa Fields shared with Digital Spy the story of an unsung hero who inspired her years ago.

The event celebrates ordinary people who make extraordinary and selfless contributions in the name of charity and compassion. When asked about the unsung heroes in her life, Fields said, “Oh my god, I know so many! After having a baby, things can go wrong.

Think about the doctors and nurses in the NHS who have saved your life or helped you in the middle of the night.”

“I once had surgery, and a nurse asked me in the middle of the night, ‘Would you like me to clean your teeth?’ It was amazing—it made me feel cared for and refreshed.

I really loved that nurse. I did thank her at the time, but I didn’t know her name. She’s just one of countless unsung heroes.”

Fields hosted the awards ceremony, which honored Gloria Hunniford for her decades of fundraising and advocacy for cancer patients and their families.

Other honorees included Kamran and Aisha Abdul-Samad, who have opened their home every weekend for over a decade to care for children with special needs, providing respite for their parents.

Dr. Hilary Jones presented the award to 11-year-old Carmela Chyler Watson for her fundraising efforts to support muscular dystrophy research and patient care. Carmela’s inspiring dedication and courage have raised over £400,000.

Meanwhile, TOWIE’s Bobby Norris paid tribute to his friend Tina Malone for her advocacy for veterans suffering from PTSD following the tragic suicide of her husband, a veteran.

Sheridan Smith also praised Ann Ming, whose 17-year legal battle with the UK justice system ultimately helped abolish the double jeopardy rule that had allowed her daughter’s killer to escape punishment.

Tonight’s event highlighted the profound impact that ordinary people can have, and how small, selfless acts—like a midnight teeth cleaning—can make a lasting impression.
