Thousands Seek Appointments at New NHS Dental Practice in Wellington

Almost 4,000 people have expressed interest in registering with a new NHS dental practice in Wellington, Somerset.

NHS Somerset, in partnership with DentistryForYou, is launching Wellington Dental Care at the Lowmoor Industrial Estate. The location was chosen due to a high demand for NHS dental appointments in the area.

Pauline Jace, a local resident, described the situation as “ridiculous.” She said many people cannot afford dental care, drawing parallels with the past when dental neglect was common. “I literally rang 21 dentists trying to get an NHS appointment,” Ms. Jace added. She also reported difficulties registering online after the new practice was announced.

The response to Wellington Dental Care has been overwhelming. By 18 September, 3,984 expressions of interest had been submitted following local promotion. Due to the high demand, DentistryForYou has temporarily paused online registration to ensure patient safety and fairness. The service hopes to reopen the sign-up portal soon.

Dr. Bernie Marden, chief medical officer at NHS Somerset, acknowledged that the practice will not immediately resolve all access issues. “We know that this practice on its own will not be able to see everyone or solve all the longstanding issues facing local people,” Dr. Marden said. “But it is very positive for the town and will help thousands more people access NHS dental care.”

The practice will begin a phased opening in mid-October, with a formal launch planned for early December.

Wellington Dental Care aims to offer a much-needed boost to NHS dental services in Somerset, providing care to patients who have faced long waiting times or difficulty finding an NHS dentist. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to improve access to dental health services in underserved areas, ensuring that residents can receive routine and preventive care.

While the initial surge in interest demonstrates the demand, officials emphasize that appointments will be managed carefully to maintain safety and fairness for all patients. The phased approach allows the practice to scale up gradually while maintaining quality care.
