A new mobile dental van is hitting the road, bringing accessible oral healthcare directly to primary schools. The initiative, called Teeth on Wheels, aims to make dental care convenient, engaging, and fun for children.
The program was founded by dental practitioner Joseph Zeid, who serves as its director. Zeid explained that the service currently reaches around 200 schools, providing dental check-ups and preventive care to thousands of children each year.
“We service about 25,000 kids annually,” he said. “Our goal is to make dental care not only accessible but also enjoyable for children, helping them develop healthy habits early on.”
Unlike traditional dental clinics, the mobile van is designed to be child-friendly. Bright colors, playful decorations, and interactive tools help reduce anxiety and make the experience less intimidating. Zeid emphasized that the mobile van allows children to receive care without missing school. “Parents don’t need to take time off work, and children don’t miss lessons. We bring the clinic to them,” he said.
The services offered by Teeth on Wheels go beyond simple check-ups. Children receive fluoride treatments, dental cleanings, and basic preventive care. The program also focuses on education, teaching students proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as the importance of a balanced diet for strong teeth. The educational aspect is designed to encourage long-term dental health and prevent cavities before they start.
Zeid noted that many children face barriers to accessing dental care, including transportation, cost, and fear of the dentist.
By bringing dental services to schools, the program aims to overcome these obstacles. “We want to ensure that every child has the opportunity for a healthy smile, regardless of their circumstances,” he said.
The mobile van program has received positive feedback from schools, parents, and students alike. Teachers report that children are excited to visit the van, and parents appreciate the convenience. Some schools have even incorporated the program into their health and wellness initiatives, recognizing the importance of dental care as part of overall student health.
Looking ahead, Zeid hopes to expand the program to reach even more schools and communities. “Our vision is to cover as many schools as possible and to make preventive dental care a routine part of children’s lives,” he said.
By combining accessibility, education, and a fun environment, Teeth on Wheels is redefining how children experience dental care. The program demonstrates that oral health doesn’t have to be intimidating and that preventative care can start early, in the familiar setting of a school playground.
