A 65-year-old British man, Nick Bishop, from Bournemouth, Dorset, faced challenges accessing NHS dental care and could not afford private treatment in the UK. After losing his upper teeth in an accident at 18 and relying on dentures that became unsatisfactory, Nick decided to seek dental implants abroad. He eventually paid £6,100 for implants in Izmir, Turkey, as it fit his budget and proved to be an achievable option.
Nick’s journey was complicated further by a car accident just days before his planned flight back to Turkey for a follow-up appointment. The accident left him with a punctured lung, broken bones, and a dislocated knee, making air travel impossible for 12 weeks. Determined to complete his treatment, Nick’s son Jordan helped him purchase a £500 Interrail pass and plan a long journey across Europe, using trains and buses.
The trip began in Bournemouth and involved 13 changes using trains and coaches, crossing cities like London, Brussels, Munich, Budapest, Bucharest, Plovdiv, Istanbul, and finally Izmir. The outward journey took four days and, despite delays such as missing a train in Bucharest, Nick managed to reach his destination. On his return, he continued to tackle the journey using multiple rail connections.
Nick shared that the journey gave him purpose during his recovery and allowed him to finally receive the dental care he needed. His medical team in the UK cleared him for train travel, provided he avoided flying. Along the way, he met travelers from various backgrounds and enjoyed conversations with people he encountered during the trip.
Nick is now heading back to Bournemouth, having successfully received his dental implants. His experience highlights the difficulties some British residents face in gaining access to affordable dental care, sometimes prompting them to seek solutions abroad, even under complex circumstances.
