University of Plymouth Opens New Dental Facility Offering 12,000 NHS Appointments Annually

A new dental clinic has opened in Plymouth, offering up to 12,000 NHS appointments every year for urgent treatments and follow-up care. The Dental Education Practice was launched by the University of Plymouth and is located in the city centre, behind the former First Stop Shop on New George Street. The clinic’s £5 million facility aims to help patients who don’t currently have an NHS dentist and to provide valuable training opportunities for dental students.

At the new practice, students from the University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental School will work side-by-side with experienced professionals. The initiative has been welcomed by health leaders, including Jason Wong, chief dental officer for England, who described it as a “positive step” for Plymouth. Councillor Mary Aspinall, from Plymouth City Council, called the clinic opening “a huge step in the right direction,” highlighting its role in encouraging trainee dentists to stay with the NHS after their studies.

Patients at the clinic may be treated by students, but specialist staff are always available to assist. Those who see a student dentist will receive care free of charge, though some treatments may involve additional costs. The centre is partly funded by the NHS, and aims to solve the ongoing challenge of finding an NHS dentist in England. According to the 2024 GP Patient Survey, about one in four people who tried to book an NHS dentist appointment over the last two years were unable to do so.

Meanwhile, longstanding dental clinics like Fay-West Dental Center in western Pennsylvania continue to offer affordable services, such as low-cost dentures and extractions. Fay-West Dental has served the community for many years, providing repairs and all phases of general dentistry. Their prices are designed to help patients without insurance or those seeking quality care at reduced cost.

Dental clinics play an important role in local healthcare by delivering a range of services, including extractions, repairs, and routine dentistry. With new clinics opening and established practices adapting, communities benefit from more accessible, affordable care and enhanced opportunities for dental students looking to build their skills and confidence.
