Shofu Article Program: It’s a Match!

Shofu Article Program: It’s a Match!

Written by: Carter Bedinghaus

Some winters feel long… this one felt historic. Between Match Day, my first root canal, and the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics, I discovered how much growth and excitement can happen in a single season.

Match Day is a memory I’ll cherish forever. After years of exams and sim labs, it finally felt real. I saw my mom’s tears, and in that moment, I felt every sacrifice and challenge come full circle. I could not comprehend that I would actually become a pediatric dentist. I am thrilled to have matched into residency back home in Tampa, Florida.

Performing my first root canal on tooth #20 was a turning point. Being so familiar with plastic, I quickly realized that root canal treatment is completely different on actual human teeth. Completing the procedure gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of endodontics. This procedure reminded me how unique every field of dentistry truly is.

Technology added another layer of excitement. Using an intraoral scanner for a band and loop space maintainer was a highlight. I love that LECOM emphasizes introducing students to the latest technology. Seeing how scanning improves patient care inspired me to stay on top of emerging advancements and maybe even contribute to developing or speaking about them one day.

Visiting patients at the LECOM Hospital gave me a new perspective. Working with medically complex patients reminded me that dentistry is never isolated; it is part of a larger healthcare system. These experiences reinforced why I love what I do, why advocacy matters, and why understanding patients beyond the operatory is essential.

And then there was the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics in Lake Erie with LECOM. Rushing into that water with my best friends will always be one of my favorite memories from my time in Erie. Experiences like this reminded me that dentistry is not just about teeth… it is about people, communities, and giving back.

Every experience this winter reminded me why I chose this path. From celebrating Match Day to performing my first root canal, from learning innovative technology to supporting the Special Olympics, I feel prepared for residency and excited to embrace the challenges ahead. This is the next step toward becoming the pediatric dentist I aspire to be.
