Researchers test CAD/CAM crowns’ fracture resistance

All-ceramic CAD/CAM crowns are a treatment option for full-coverage restorations for endodontically treated teeth, but how do they resist fracturing? Researchers compared two kinds of crowns to see which held up best. Crowns with an amalgam core foundation generally resisted failure better than so-called endocrowns, they found. “Crowns supported by amalgam cores demonstrated more favorable modes of failure,” the researchers wrote (Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, August 25, 2018).

Is an antibiotic always necessary for bleeding gums?

How many times has this happened to you: Your hygienist tells you that your patient’s gums are bleeding and before you can even respond, the patient says something to the effect of “Just give me a prescription and be done with it.” Well, that may treat the immediate symptom of bleeding gums, but it hardly goes to the cause of the disease. What’s the best scanning strategy for CAD/CAM restorations?

Using intraoral scanners for digital impressions is an integral part of any CAD/CAM process. But what is the best strategy for scanning a patient’s mouth, and does it differ by type of scanner? Researchers wanted to find out. They scanned a model four different ways using four different scanners to determine the best technique. For three of the scanners tested, the researchers found that the scanning strategy did not affect

Second Opinion: Opioids and the dental community

In the past five years, I’ve watched a dramatic increase in the number of my patients who lay back, open wide, and expose a mouth filled with rotten teeth. One 21-year-old woman who came to my office had teeth and gums that were so broken, infected, and rotten from “meth mouth” that I was forced to pull all of her teeth and fit her for dentures. This was a pivotal
