BSG Winter Conference Highlights Innovations and Challenges in Dental Services for Older Adults

LONDON — The British Society of Gerodontology (BSG) hosted its Winter Conference in December 2025 at the Wellcome Collection, drawing dental professionals from across the UK to discuss care for older adults. The programme covered topics ranging from the climate crisis and oro-systemic disease to policy, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), and interactive case studies.

Opening the event, BSG President Becky Wassall highlighted the theme, “Addressing Oral Health Inequalities and Complex Patient Needs.”

Dr Zahra Shehabi, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at Barts Health NHS Trust, addressed the impact of climate change on older, frail patients. She emphasized sustainable practices in dental care, including patient empowerment, prevention, low-carbon alternatives, and advocating for vulnerable groups affected by extreme weather.

Highlighting innovation in dental education, BDS4 student Shivam Kanda showcased a project using artificial intelligence to support remote patient consultations, impressing delegates with the potential for technology to enhance care delivery.

Dr Susan Bissett, Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University, focused on the role of dental care professionals (DCPs) in improving access to care. She outlined how better use of skills mix in primary care can address the growing demands of an ageing population, particularly for preventive treatments such as cleanings and fillings.

Consultant Radiologist Dr Graham Lloyd-Jones discussed oro-systemic disease, urging dental professionals to recognize the systemic impact of oral dysbiosis. He highlighted links between oral bacteria and conditions including neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases and stressed the importance of mouth care for inpatients.

Dr Rakhee Patel, Deputy Chief Dental Officer, provided insight into dental public health policy, strategy, and workforce planning. She emphasized initiatives to improve oral care for care home residents and advocated for their inclusion in national guidelines.

Dr Dipesh Patel, Consultant in Oral Surgery, offered a practical update on MRONJ, sharing clinical strategies for managing cases, often within primary care settings.

The conference concluded with interactive case discussions led by Professor Gerry McKenna, Daniel Gillway, and Emma Elliott, covering advanced tooth wear, care for patients with dementia, and oral cancer management. Delegates engaged digitally, responding to clinical questions in real time.

Poster competition winners—Kery Ford, Sally Rowe, Kate Wyncoll, and Tanhida Jalil—were announced, and Dr Camilla Boynton was welcomed as incoming BSG President for 2026.

The BSG Winter Conference underscored the urgent need to enhance dental services for older adults through sustainable practices, effective use of DCPs, medical collaboration, policy development, and improved primary care access.
