The Cool Aid Society has started its annual fundraising campaign to gather $100,000 for dental care for people facing financial challenges. The campaign, known as the Every Smile Matters drive, aims to collect the needed funds by the end of the month. Donations are being doubled thanks to a generous anonymous donor, who is matching every contribution up to $50,000.
Cool Aid’s dental clinic helps low-income adults by offering a range of dental services, including fillings, root canals, and extractions. The clinic receives more than 3,000 patient visits each year. Many of those who seek help are also dealing with homelessness, mental health issues, or substance use. According to the organization, most patients have not been able to access proper dental care for many years, allowing small problems to become severe and costly over time.
Kathleen Quast, the manager of the dental clinic, stressed the importance of caring support. She explained that for many, small gestures and opportunities, like those provided by the clinic, can be life changing. Waheeda Esmail, interim chief executive of Cool Aid, shared her own experience of losing dental care as a child. Esmail said she went several years without treatment, and for some patients this gap can be even longer.
Since the Canadian Dental Care Plan began in 2024, the clinic’s staff has been helping patients enroll and complete tasks such as filing taxes, which is required to qualify for the plan. However, many face difficulties with paperwork and eligibility, especially when everyday survival takes priority. Gaps in coverage still exist, so Cool Aid continues to depend on donations to offer care for those in need.
The dental campaign highlights the ongoing need for community support so that everyone can have access to basic dental health services. Organizers stress that each contribution helps change lives and allows more people to smile with confidence.
