Hair Loss Treatment Advances as New Drugs and AI Therapies Promise Better Results

Hair loss is increasingly common, with dermatologists seeing more patients than ever, particularly women in their 40s and 50s who are concerned about thinning hair. Factors such as GLP-1 medications and rapid weight loss have further heightened the demand for effective solutions.

On a recent episode of The Beauty Authority, New York dermatologist Dr. David J. Goldberg of Schweiger Dermatology Group discussed the emerging era of hair restoration and what patients can realistically expect in the coming years.

Oral minoxidil, initially developed as a blood pressure drug, has gained popularity as a hair-growth treatment. “The current formulation was not made for hair growth. It was made for blood pressure,” Dr. Goldberg explains. Its rapid absorption and decline in the bloodstream limit its effectiveness on hair follicles. Minoxidil works by dilating blood vessels to create a healthy environment for growth, but inconsistent exposure reduces its impact.

A new extended-release version, developed by Veradermics and currently in phase three trials, aims to provide a steady dose over time. Phase two data suggest it performs nearly three times better than existing options. While not yet FDA-approved, it could reach the market within a few years.

Another groundbreaking development is ABS-201, an AI-designed antibody therapy from AbSci targeting the prolactin receptor on hair follicles. Traditionally associated with lactation, prolactin has now been linked to hair growth. ABS-201 blocks the receptor, prompting follicles to shift from resting to growth phases. Early animal studies show significant regrowth, and phase one human trials are underway in Australia. The treatment would likely involve periodic injections, with effects lasting up to a year.

Dr. Goldberg emphasizes that these therapies are complementary rather than competing. Oral minoxidil supports a healthy follicle environment, while antibody therapy actively stimulates growth. Combined with emerging treatments such as high-quality topical exosomes, the approach to hair loss could change dramatically.

“Over the next five years, the hair-growth industry is going to be transformed,” Dr. Goldberg says—news that brings hope to millions frustrated by thinning hair.
