Luxembourg Patient Group Warns Against Overseas Dental Therapy Driven by Low Prices

People in Luxembourg are being urged to think carefully before travelling abroad for dental therapy, despite the attraction of lower prices, a patient advocacy group has warned.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Patiente Vertriedung (The Patient Advocacy Association) said it is concerned about a growing number of patients seeking dental treatment in distant countries. The warning focuses on the rise of commercial medical tourism, rather than routine cross-border care in neighbouring regions.

The group cautioned that foreign providers often promote their services aggressively on social media, highlighting success stories and perfect results while downplaying potential risks. Key information about quality standards, materials, treatment methods and aftercare is frequently not disclosed, making it difficult for patients to assess long-term consequences.

According to the association, complications after treatments such as crowns, bridges, implants and dentures are common. Patients often report ongoing pain, inflammation, infections or poorly fitted prostheses after returning to Luxembourg.

Local dentists are not required to correct or continue treatment started abroad, the group noted. As a result, patients may need to travel again to address problems. Seeking compensation can also be complex, as claims must be pursued under the laws of the country where the treatment was provided, with no unified medical liability framework across the EU.

Patiente Vertriedung advised patients to consider not only cost, but also quality, safety, aftercare and legal protection before choosing to travel for dental therapy.

The association also called on the Luxembourg government to address the underlying issue by ensuring equal access to high-quality, safe dental care within the country.
