Medi-Cal Urges Beneficiaries to Use Vision and Oral Care Benefits Before 2026 Cuts

Many Medi-Cal beneficiaries remain unaware of covered vision and dental services, officials said during a virtual briefing last week, a gap that leaves preventive care underused and raises the risk of later complications.

“Preventative care is important to avoid serious complications,” said Dr. Donny Shiu, Medi-Cal’s vision program chief. He and Dana Durham, chief of the dental division, said eye and oral exams can also reveal early signs of major illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Under current rules, Medi-Cal members may receive a routine eye exam free every 24 months. The exam screens for conditions including glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and abnormal eye pressure.

Shiu noted that adults’ eyeglasses benefits have recently been restored: “All you have to do is ask, and they (corrective eyeglasses) will be provided to you.” Contact lenses or other corrective aids are available for those who cannot wear glasses.

Beneficiaries can find vision providers directly through the managed care plan in which they are enrolled; no referral is required.

Durham outlined covered dental services, which include check-ups, cleanings, X-rays and restorative procedures such as fillings, root canals, crowns, dentures and treatment for infections.

She emphasized that Medi-Cal members do not pay co-pays or deductibles for medically necessary dental care. “Medi-Cal members should never be paying for dental care,” she said.

Dental providers can be located via the Find-A-Dentist directory on the Medi-Cal website.

Officials warned that coverage will change in July 2026. After that date, some income-eligible adults over 19 will be limited to emergency dental care only.

The restricted group includes undocumented immigrants, lawful permanent residents who have held a green card for less than five years, and individuals classified as Permanently Residing Under Color Of Law (PRUCOL).

Pregnant people and anyone under 19 will retain full dental coverage regardless of immigration status.
