Oral Health Experts Urge Simple Daily Habits As Part Of 2026 New Year Wellness Goals

As 2026 begins, health experts are calling on the public to include oral health in their New Year wellness resolutions, placing it alongside more common goals such as exercise, nutrition and sleep.

Dr. Sonia Datta, MDS, PhD, Professor of Public Health Dentistry, said oral care remains one of the most neglected aspects of overall health, despite growing evidence linking oral hygiene to systemic conditions. She noted that the mouth plays a vital role as an entry point to both the digestive and respiratory systems, yet it often receives attention only after problems arise.

“While people reassess their diet and lifestyle habits, oral hygiene is frequently overlooked until discomfort develops,” Dr. Datta said.
To address this gap, health professionals have introduced a “2026 Oral Reset Checklist” built around five practical habits.

These include brushing twice daily for a full two minutes, cleaning the tongue to reduce bacterial buildup, using floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque between teeth, maintaining proper hydration to support saliva production, and incorporating traditional botanicals into daily oral care routines.

A key trend expected to shape oral care in 2026 is the increasing use of Ayurvedic herbs in mainstream dental products. Consumers are showing growing interest in natural ingredients that offer both traditional use and scientific support.

Among the botanicals gaining attention are clove oil, known for its antibacterial properties and ability to relieve discomfort; pudina satva, valued for long-lasting breath freshness; and tomar beej, traditionally associated with gum health.

Products that combine these ingredients with modern clinical validation, including those carrying the Indian Dental Association (IDA) Seal of Acceptance, are becoming more popular among health-conscious consumers.

Experts say the broader “2026 Oral Health Reset” is not about drastic changes, but about building awareness through small, consistent actions. The initiative aims to highlight the close connection between oral hygiene and overall physical wellness, encouraging habits that are easy to maintain and effective over the long term.

Health advocates hope the movement will make 2026 a milestone year for oral health awareness, reinforcing the message that simple daily care can deliver lasting benefits for both dental and general health.
